Nigeria’s Flamingos were in ruthless form on Thursday, trouncing Niger Republic 9-0 in the second match of this year’s WAFU U-17 Girls Cup, taking place in Ghana.
Shakirat Moshood netted four of the goals, with Janet Akekoromowei adding three. Asisat Animashaun and Peace Effiong scored the other goals.
The Flamingos started brilliantly, with Animashaun scoring after only five minutes, following an cross by Mary Mamudu.
FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup starlet Moshood made it 2-0 with a screamer from 35 yards in the 17th minute.
Six minutes later, Moshood scored her second and Nigeria’s third, assisted by Animashaun, and in the 33rd minute, Akekoromowei made it four with a close range finish.
Akekoromowei escaped the attention of Nigerien defenders in the 42nd minute to power home for Nigeria’s fifth, and completed her hat-trick almost immediately after with a powerful header.
Moshood sealed her own hat-trick in the 45th minute to make it 7-0 against Nigeria’s Northern neighbours at half-time.
Moshood was on target again just before the hour mark, collecting the ball high up the pitch and making a solo run to make it 8-0.
With 11 minutes left on the clock, Effiong also got on the scoresheet, when she fired home from outside the box.
The Flamingos will next face Cote d’Ivoire on Monday.
