The Flamingos of Nigeria have been eliminated from the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in the Dominican Republic after a 2-0 defeat to the United States of America on Saturday night.
USA struck once in each half to secure the quarter-final victory and end the winning streak of the Flamingos, who had won all of their three group matches.
Kennedy Fuller and Kimmi Ascanio scored the goals at the Santiago de los Caballeros Stadium to end the journey for Bankole Olowookere’s side.
USA took the lead two minutes to half-time from the penalty spot after Fuller was brought down in the Nigeria box by Shakirat Moshood.
The penalty was confirmed by a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review and Fuller converted the spot kick.
The Flamingos had a golden opportunity to pull level early in the second half when a defensive mix-up gave Taiwo Afolabi a clear shot at goal, but USA goalkeeper Evan Osteen made a big save.
USA doubled their lead and sealed victory in the 71st minute as Ascanio’s low shot nestled in the bottom corner.
