Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman scored on his return from injury but missed a penalty, while his fellow Nigeria international Samuel Chukwueze was in action as Atalanta and AC Milan got dumped out of this season’s UEFA Champions League.
In Tuesday’s round of 16 play-off second leg clash in Italy, Belgian side Club Brugge stunned Atalanta 3-1 to progress into the round of 16 with a 5-2 aggregate win.
Also in action in the encounter was Super Eagles midfielder Raphael Onyedika who played for 90 minutes for Club Brugge as he made his ninth appearance in the competition this season.
Lookman, who had been out with a knee injury since late last month, was named on Atalanta’s bench.
But the 27-year-old made an instant impact when he came, scoring in the 46th minute to make it 3-1.
It was his fifth goal in seven Champions League games this season for Atalanta.
The reigning African Player of the Year had the opportunity to further reduce the deficit after Atalanta were awarded a penalty, but his tame effort was saved by former Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet on 61 minutes.
A brace from Chemsdine Talbi and Ferran Jutgla had given Club Brugge a 3-0 first half lead.
Atalanta ended the match with 10 men as Rafael Toloi was sent off with a straight red card three minutes from time.
At San Siro, Chukwueze was brought on with seven minutes left for his seventh Champions League appearance of the season as AC Milan crashed out after being held to a 1-1 draw by Feyenoord.
The draw means Milan lost 2-1 on aggregate, Feyenoord having won the first leg 1-0 in the Netherlands last week.
Also on Tuesday, Bayern Munich escaped a third upset of the night with a late Alphonso Davies goal.
Celtic were leading the Bundesliga giants 1-0 in Munich and the tie was heading into extra-time when Davies struck in stoppage time to send Vincent Kompany’s side through 3-2 on aggregate.
Benfica and AS Monaco played a thrilling 3-3 draw Lisbon, with the Portuguese club advancing 4-3 on aggregate.
The Champions League round of 16 play-offs second legs will continue on Wednesday night.
The standout fixture is at the Santiago Bernabeu where Real Madrid will host Manchester City.
The Spanish giants hold a 3-2 lead from the first leg played at the Etihad Stadium last Tuesday.
