The Falconets of Nigeria have booked their spot in the round of 16 of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia after a 4-0 rout of Venezuela in Cali on Saturday night.
Amina Bello, Chiamaka Okwuchukwu, Flourish Sabastine and Joy Igbokwe all netted in the one-sided encounter against the South Americans.
The two-time U-20 Women’s World Cup finalists advanced into the round of 16 of the competition with six points from a possible nine in the group phase.
Bello slotted home a cut-back by Okwuchukwu for the first goal against the South Americans in the 16th minute.
Okwuchukwu went from assist maker to goalscorer 12 minutes later, when she met a corner kick with a powerful header to make it 2-0 for Nigeria.
Okwuchukwu, who scored the Falconets’ only goal in their 3-1 defeat to Germany on Wednesday night, was involved again in first-half stoppage time, when she assisted Flourish Sabastine with a cross that the latter converted to put the Falconets firmly in control.
Substitute Igbokwe made it 4-0 four minutes into added time, with the result guaranteeing a knockout spot for the Falconets.
The Nigerian ladies will contest for a quarter-final ticket on Thursday in Bogota against a yet-to-be-determined opponent.
