The Falconets of Nigeria began their FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup campaign with a 1-0 victory over South Korea in the early hours of Monday in Colombia.
Flourish Sabastine scored the only goal in Bogota to earn the Nigerian ladies all the three points in the tight contest.
There were few opportunities in the game between two strong sides, but the Falconets had more chances, especially in a more open second half at the Estadio Metropolitano de Techo.
Mary Lucky Mkpa led the line well for Nigeria and should have scored from two golden opportunities.
The Asians, who also lost by a lone goal to Nigeria in a group phase encounter at the last edition of the competition in Costa Rica two years ago, came close to drawing the first blood early in the match but Shukurat Oladipo got one foot to a teasing cross from the right to wrong-foot Park.
After coming close a few times, Sabastine finally found the breakthrough with an effort that smashed the upright and rolled into the net.
The Falconets next face three-time champions Germany at the same venue on Wednesday evening.
