Trabzonspor president Ertugrul Dogan has announced that the Turkish club are in talks to sign Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu.

The towering Nigeria international was in the Southampton side relegated from the English Premier League last season and is one of the stars set to depart St Mary’s Stadium.

While discussing Trabzonspor’s transfer targets at a press conference on Tuesday, Dogan revealed the club’s plans for Onuachu.

Dogan said the Turkish Super Lig side were keen on re-signing Onuachu, this time on a long-term contract.

“He’s on our agenda. We’re discussing with him. Hopefully we can complete this soon,” Dogan noted, adding that Trabzonspor are also negotiating with former Manchester United defender Axel Tuanzebe.

Ipswich Town have the option to extend Tuanzebe’s current deal for another year, but with relegation to the English second tier, Trabzonspor may be a tempting option.

“Axel Tuanzebe is also a player that the scouting team and our coach like, we are talking,” said Dogan.

According to Sport Witness, Onuachu appears close to signing for the Turkish club after claims he had agreed personal terms to return.

Onuachu, 31, excelled while on loan at Trabzonspor from Southampton in the 2023/2024 season, registering 17 goals and four assists in 25 appearances.

However, he has struggled at Southampton since joining the club from Genk for €18m in January 2023, producing only four goals and one assist in 40 mostly substitute appearances.
