Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has warned his teammates against complacency and encouraged the team to go for victory always following the hard-fought 1-0 win over Libya in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying clash in Uyo on Friday.
Fisayo Dele-Bashiru came from the bench to score the only goal of the game in the 86th minute to help the Super Eagles maintain their lead at the top of Group D with seven points from two matches.
“It’s never done until the fat lady sings, they say. It’s a good start for us. We knew how important this first game was, especially when you play a double-header,” Troost-Ekong said.
The 31-year-old stressed that it was clear the strategy of the Libyans was to secure a draw in the game.
“We know that Libya came here to try to get a point and they really played very defensively and I think it would have been in their favour if they got that point,” he added.
The Al-Kholood defender made light of the pressure that comes with representing the nation and underlined the importance of delivering results in every game.
“Like I said before, pressure is a privilege. We are a team that should be winning almost all the games especially when we play here at home and today we saw even if it was ugly, and it took a long time, in the end, we got what we needed to do. Three points are very important for us,” Troost-Ekong said.
The Super Eagles will play the return leg of the double-header against the Mediterranean Knights on Tuesday in Benghazi.
