Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali and defender Bruno Onyemaechi have made jest of Libya following Friday’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying clash at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.
The North Africans were beaten 1-0, but before Fisayo Dele-Bashiru’s 86th minute goal they had resorted to time-wasting, rolling on the floor at the slightest contact, particularly goalkeeper Murad Al Woheshi, who collapsed to the turf several times while the score was still 0-0.
He was cautioned in the 57th minute of the game by the referee who had delivered a warning to him earlier. Also, his teammates took their time to get on their feet each time they went down.
However, the Libyans discovered urgency after Nigeria’s goal, and they, including their officials, rushed to the referee at the final whistle, unhappy that there were only four minutes of stoppage time.
“Who come wise pass?” Nwabali, who also did his own staying down routine after Dele-Bashiru’s strike, wrote on X not long after the mstch, adding a laughing emoji..
The 28-year-old Chippa United shot-stopper took to X again on Saturday to laugh at Libya.
“Cony man die cony man bury am. Great team performance and clean sheet,” he wrote, suggesting that the Mediterranean Knights ultimately paid for their antics.
On his part, Boavista left-back Onyemaechi wrote on X: “Important three points. Omo CAF suppose give them (Libya) award on wasting time.”
The Super Eagles lead Group D of the AFCON qualifiers with seven points and will face Libya, who are bottom with one point, again on Tuesday in Benghazi.
