Mohamed Salah played a pivotal role as Liverpool cemented their position at the top of this season’s English Premier League, extending their lead to 11 points with a comfortable 2-0 victory at Manchester City on Sunday.
The leaders had already been given a massive boost in the title race when Arsenal lost 1-0 at home to West Ham on Saturday before moving into what looks like an unassailable position with a superb display against the fallen reigning champions.
Liverpool went ahead at the Etihad Stadium with a brilliant corner routine after 14 minutes, Salah scoring his 30th goal of the season after Dominik Szoboszlai played Alex Mac Allister’s delivery into his path.
Egypt forwarevSalah repaid the compliment eight minutes before the break, playing in a perfectly weighted delivery for Szoboszlai to calmly finish low past City goalkeeper Ederson.
Salah is the first player to score 25 or more goals and register 15 or more assists in a Premier League season, and the first player in Premier League history to register 40 or more goal involvements in two different seasons.
Liverpool were able to close out a hugely significant win without any alarms in the second half, content to protect the advantage they had established in the first 45 minutes.
The Reds are now set to end City’s four-year Premier League reign, leading second-placed Arsenal by 11 points with just 11 rounds of matches to go (Arsenal have a game in hand).
