Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espírito Santo has confirmed that Taiwo Awoniyi missed his side’s 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa in the English Premier League on Saturday due to a hamstring injury.
The Super Eagles striker, who has not had much playing time this season due to the impressive form of Chris Wood, had begun featuring more regularly following an injury to the New Zealander during the international break.
However, despite more playing time, Awoniyi has struggled to make any impact.
The former Liverpool striker was not included in Forest’s matchday squad on Saturday, as their pursuit of a UEFA Champions League spot suffered a setback with the defeat to Villa.
“I don’t know,” Nuno told Sky Sports when asked when Awoniyi would be back in action. “It’s going to be day to day. He felt something in his hamstring.”
Awoniyi’s form and fitness concerns recent cost him a place in the Super Eagles’ 23-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe in March.
He has managed only one goal in 23 (mostly substitute) Premier League appearances for Forest this season.
