Rivers United returned to the summit of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) on Thursday, following their 2-0 victory over Shooting Stars at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt.
Aniekeme Okon put the hosts ahead in the 50th minute before Ndifreke Effiong sealed the win 15 minutes later to ensure Finidi George’s side retain their unbeaten run this campaign.
The defeat, their third in the campaign, leaves Oluyole Warriors 16th in the table.
Bendel Insurance snapped a three-game winless run to thrash Bayelsa United 3-0 in Benin City, also on Thursday.
Kayode Solomon put the home side ahead after 17 minutes and Nnamdi Anthony made it 2-0 in the 78th minute. Michael Enaruma then put the icing on the cake in stoppage time, with defeat piling more pressure on Ladan Bosso.
Plateau United inflicted the second loss of the season on Remo Stars in Jos with a 3-1 victory in their mid-week clash.
Chukwuebuka Anthony scored his side’s first goal after just four minutes, and Sadiq Adamu doubled their lead before Anthony completed his brace in the 71st minute. Jabbar Malik reduced the deficit for the away side seven minutes from time.
Ikorodu City secured an impressive 1-1 draw at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri against Heartland.
The away team opened the scoring after just four minutes when Salau Yusuf headed home. However, Heartland denied the visitors their second consecutive win in the 66th minute through Chukwuma Agor.
Katsina United pipped Akwa United 1-0 at home to move up to the fifth spot in the table.
