Ikorodu City players and officials were prevented from leaving the stadium for hours by rampaging Shooting Stars of Ibadan (3SC) supporters on Sunday night after their Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) fixture.
The match ended 0-0 at the at the Lekan Salami Stadium in the Oyo State capital, and the visitors were held hostage by fans of the host team.
Reports from those on the scene said the Ikorodu City team bus was damaged and some of their travelling fans were injured when 3SC supporters resorted to violence at the end of the week 32 encounter.
The match ended at around 7.30pm but the Ikorodu City players and officials were still locked in the dressing room two hours later as violence escalated outside.
Eye witnesses also reported that the match referee was manhandled by the 3SC fans who blamed him for their side’s failure to win.
One of the Ikorodu City players shared a video from inside the dressing room where they were locked up in darkness, narrating that the power was turned off by the stadium management.
Apart from being dissatisfied with the officiating, the 3SC fans are also believed to be retaliating what they described as hostile treatment by Ikorodu City supporters during the reverse fixture in Lagos.
The organisers of the league have clamped down heavily on crown violence in recent years, with culpable clubs being banished to other grounds for their home games in addition to heavy fines and points deduction.
The draw on Sunday prevented 3SC from moving up to third spot in the NPFL table, a position which secures a ticket to the CAF Confederation Cup.
