Remo Stars returned to the top of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) on Sunday with a 2-0 victory over visiting El-Kanemi Warriors, after previous leaders Rivers United lost 1-0 at champions Enugu Rangers.
In the CAF Confederation Cup, Enyimba came back from 2-0 down in Uyo to draw 2-2 with Zamalek of Egypt in their group stage clash.
Peter Onuoha and Franck Mawuena struck in the first half to give Remo Stars the win, which took then back to the top of the table with 29 points from 16 matches.
Finidi George’s Rivers United fell to second spot on goal difference after going down in Enugu to Chinemerem Ugwueze’s 15th minute goal.
With the win, Rangers, who had a poor start to the season, rose to third place, just two points behind the leaders.
In other NPFL fixtures on Sunday, Plateau United defeated Heartland 3-2 in Jos, Abia Warriors overcame visiting Niger Tornadoes 2-1, Kano Pillars beat Katsina United 1-0 in the Northern derby, and Bayelsa United scored late to secure a 1-0 home win over Ikorodu City.
In the CAF Confederation Cup, two-time African champions Enyimba avoided a second consecutive defeat by scoring twice, once late in the first half and once early in the second period, against Egyptian giants Zamalek at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium.
The visitors took a 2-0 lead in the first 41 minutes, but Enyimba cut the deficit through Ifeanyi Ihemekwele in first-half added time, and equalised with Chinedu Ufere’s goal 12 minutes after the break.
It is Enyimba’s first point after two matches in the group stage as they seek to advance to the quarter-finals.
