Team Delta got their outing in the women’s basketball event at the 2025 Niger Delta Sports Festival in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, off to a perfect start as they edged out Team Cross River on Thursday.
At the Dakkada Skills Acquisition Centre, after a tightly contested encounter, Team Delta triumphed 44-39 to open their campaign with a win.
In the other fixture that was billed for the same venue, Team Bayelsa walked over Team Abia who withdrew due to logistical setbacks.
Despite suffering defeat in their opening fixture, coach of Team Cross River Eteta Eta praised his players’ efforts.
“This is just like a testing space for my players, for most of them this is their first tournament,” he said. “Despite the fact that we played against league players it’s a good start.
“Some of them were quite nervous putting themselves into the space we have right now but I still give them credit.”
At the West Itam Sports Centre, Uyo, it was another victory for Team Delta as they overcame Team Abia 23-11 in men’s handball.
Meanwhile, Team Imo volleyball player, Chinonso Nwokeocha, was disqualified for being overaged and also being a national team player.
