Akwa Ibom and Delta states shared the gold medals in the men’s and women’s 400m athletics events at the Niger Delta Sports Festival (NDSF) in Uyo on Saturday, while Bayelsa totally dominated in traditional wrestling.
Victor Imeh Samson clinched gold in the men’s 400m in a time of 46.14 seconds for the host state, while Delta’s Ngozi Treasure Okereke claimed gold in the women’s race.
Meanwhile, Bayelsa State secured seven of the eight gold medals available in traditional wrestling as the event was concluded at the Uyo Township Stadium on Saturday.
Bayelsa, under the leadership of Olympic gold medallist Daniel Igali, swept all four gold medals in the women’s event.
Weyinkurokiye Andrew, Mercy Oyeloa and Bekefula Tarilayefa won gold in the women’s 45kg, 55kg and 60kg categories, with Ebipatei Mugienbofa triumphing in the 70kg final.
Titi Kuromeyefa, Eregha Dedekemei and Newlife Ebikeme all won gold in the men’s 60kg, 75kg and 90kg+ categories for Bayelsa, leaving one gold medal for Delta, which was claimed by Bayelsa-born Eguda Pereladei.
Bayelsa comfortably finished on top of the traditional wrestling medal table with seven gold and one bronze, with Delta a distant second with one gold, one silver and two bronze medals.
Imo finished third with three silver and three bronze medals while Ondo finished fourth with two silver and one bronze.
