Leicester City manager Steve Cooper has revealed that Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi trained on Wednesday after the ordeal in Libya.
The Nigeria national team travelled on Sunday to Libya for the return leg of their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match which was due to hold in Benghazi.
However, as it was preparing to land, their flight was diverted from the venue of the game to Al Abraq airport, a distance of around 150 miles. The team was held up at the airport for over 18 hours without food, water and internet.
The Super Eagles decided to boycott the game due to trauma.
Ndidi is now back in training with Leicester, as they prepare for their Premier League clash with Southampton at the St Mary’s Stadium this Saturday.
“He is fine, that’s the most important thing. He is back with us and safe and well. We were in close contact with him throughout the situation and he kept us updated,” Cooper said on Thursday during his pre-match press conference.
“Everyone was in contact, myself included, and thankfully the situation got resolved. He was back with us soon after and has trained since. He is in a safe place and that includes the mental side of it as well.
“He is more than happy to get back to business as usual. He trained yesterday and will train today and will be ready for the game at the weekend.”
The 27-year-old has been one of the key players for the Foxes since the start of the season. He has registered four assists in seven matches in the English top flight.
