Sporting Lisbon have offficially confirmed Manchester United have told them of their plan to pay Rúben Amorim’s release clause.
That clause stands at a general €20m with two further clauses related to it. Should a club within Portugal want to activate then the amount goes up to €30m.
At the same time there’s a certain number of named clubs, including Manchester United, for whom the amount goes down to €10m.
Sporting have now taken the serious step of confirming via the CMVM financial regulator that the Premier League club have told them they are prepared to pay the full €10m needed.
“Manchester United FC expressed an interest in hiring coach Rúben Amorim, with the Board of Directors of Sporting SAD referring to the terms and conditions set out in the employment contract in force between the Company and the coach, specifically the respective termination clause and the amount of Euro 10,000,000.00,” the Portuguese champions stated.
“Manchester United FC expressed an interest in paying Sporting SAD the amount of the aforementioned clause.”
Portuguese newspaper A Bola had earlier reported that Manchester United were sending three officials to Lisbon on Tuesday to seal the deal for their new manager.
Sporting face Nacional on Tuesday night in the Taca da Liga and that looks like it could be Amorim’s goodbye match.
This is a situation progressing very quickly, and that would fit in with Manchester United having their new manager in charge ahead of facing Chelsea on Sunday.
Amorim, 39, will replace Erik ten Hag, who was sacked on Monday following a poor start the season, which has left Manchester United 14th in the Premier League table.
