Liverpool have set their sights on Atalanta’s Super Eagles star Ademola Lookman as a possible replacement for Luis Diaz.
Lookman have been impressive for Atalanta since joining them in 2022, cementing his status after bagging a hat-trick in last season’s UEFA Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen.
Unfortunately, things have gone south between the African Player of the Year and his coach Gianpiero Gasperini following a penalty miss against Club Brugge in midweek.
After pulling a goal back for Atalanta, Lookman had the chance to make the score again in the UEFA Champions League clash but saw his penalty saved by Simon Mignolet as the Italian side were eliminated.
This led to Gasperini blasting the forward, labeling him one of the worst penalty takers he had ever seen, a statement which Lookman described via social media as disrespectful.
Now, according to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Liverpool are set to take advantage of the situation at Atalanta.
The club are aware Diaz’s departure is a real possibility, as several teams have shown interest in him and Reds are exploring options in the market.
Lookman fits the profile they are looking for: a skilful, fast winger with the ability to unbalance in one-on-one situations.
Also, his experience in the English Premier League with teams such as Everton, Leicester and Fulham is a factor in his favour.
