Super Falcons forward, Uchenna Kanu, has said that she has been playing while injured and has decided to undergo surgery.
The 27-year-old was part of the Falcons’ squad to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
She also played at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, where the team failed to qualify from the group which had world champions Spain, and powerhouses—Brazil and Japan.
Kanu, who plays for National Women Soccer League side, Racing Louisville, in Kentucky, United States of America, explained in a video posted to social media on Monday, that after a recent visit to the doctor, she was told that the injury had worsened because she had continued to play through it, regardless of the discomfort.
She, however, did not reveal the nature of the injury.
The footballer, who was emotional in the clip, said she has not been playing in recent weeks because of the problem. Kanu asked for prayers for a quick recovery and promised to do her best to return to the best form possible.
“Hey guys! As you all know, I’ve been struggling for a while with an injury that has been causing me a lot pain. But I’ve been pushing through it, trying to play with the injury, but I’ve been in a lot of pain and I’ve decided to go through a procedure, to do a surgery for it and be done with the injury and the pain. I’ve decided that,” Kanu said.
“And I just want to let you guys know that I’ve always wanted to play, I’ve always to give the best to my team, play whenever I’m given the opportunity, to do my best, regardless of the pain. Going to the doctor last week, he confirmed that I was making the injury worse, so I decided to go through this procedure, to get this injury done over with, get over the pain.
“So, yea, I will be going through surgery and I just need you guy to pray for me, I will work hard to come back as soon as I can.
“So I just want to put it out there, so that you guys will know what is going on with me, and I’m looking to being done with this pain and come back to my best because it has been so long. I will work so hard to get back on my feet.
“Thank you guys so much for the support I’ve been getting, I really appreciate it during this time, that I find peace, that I find whatever I need to do what I know how to do.”
