Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has said that a decision on Erik ten Hag is not his call as speculation swirls around the Dutchman’s future.
The club have had a disappointing start to the 2024/2025 campaign, winning only two and losing three of their first six English Premier League games, and failing to win any of their last four fixtures in all competitions.
There has been talk that Ten Hag is facing the sack if United lose to Aston Villa in their Premier League clash at Villa Park on Sunday, but Ratcliffe neither refuted nor confirmed the claim.
<mWhen asked if he has faith in Ten Hag, Ratcliffe told BBC Sport on Friday: “I don’t want to answer that question…I like Erik. I think he’s a very good coach but at the end of the day it’s not my call, it’s the management team that’s running Manchester United that have to decide how we best run the team in many different respects.
“But that team that’s running Manchester United has only been together since June or July. They weren’t there in January, February, March or April – [CEO] Omar [Berrada], [Sporting Director] Dan Ashworth – they only arrived in July
“They’ve only been there…you can count it in weeks almost – they’ve not been there a long time so they need to take stock and make some sensible decisions.
“Our objective is very clear – we want to take Manchester United back to where it should be, and it’s not there yet, obviously – that’s very clear.”
Ten Hag has been at Manchester United since the beginning of the 2022/2023 season, winning the Carabao Cup in his first campaign and the FA Cup last term.
However, the club finished eighth in the Premier League last season, their lowest in decades, and were bottom of a UEFA Champions League group that contained Bayern Munich, Galatasaray and FC Copenhagen.
