Inter Milan fell to a third consecutive defeat across all competitions on Sunday as they were beaten 1-0 in Serie A by AS Roma at San Siro.
Matias Soule scored the only goal of the match to earn Claudio Ranieri’s Roma all three points in Milan.
The result handed Napoli a huge chance to leapfrog Inter and take the lead in Serie A just four games from the end of the season.
Inter’s season is falling apart at the most crucial part of the campaign, with the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final against Barcelona coming up on Wednesday.
The Nerazzurri had a devastating week, losing at Bologna to be caught at the top of the table by Napoli, then crashing out of the Coppa Italia semi-final with a 3-0 defeat to Milan on Wednesday.
With the stunning away victory, Roma rose to fifth, level on 60 points with Bologna in fourth, the last Champions League spot.
Inter and Napoli are level on 71 points ahead of the latter’s clash with Torino on Sunday night.
Meanwhile in England, in a Premier League fixture that kicked off at about the same time, Manchester United needed a stoppage-time goal to earn a 1-1 draw with 10-man Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.
Ghana forward Antoine Semenyo fired the hosts into the lead with a drilled low shot in the 23rd minute.
Bournemouth were reduced to 10 men 20 minutes from time after the referee issued a red card to Evanilson following a video assistant referee (VAR) review, and United dominated from that moment.
Ruben Amorim’s floundering side finally got the equaliser six minutes into added time when Rasmus Hojlund turned home Luke Shaw’s low cross into the Bournemouth box.
The shared points left Bournemouth in 10th place, with United 14th.
