Super Eagles interim coach Austin Eguavoen has promised to address Victor Boniface over his goal drought in the team following the 1-0 win over Libya in a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier in Uyo on Friday.
It took substitute Fisayo Dele-Bashiru to rescue Nigeria from playing back-to-back draws in the qualifiers with his late winner at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium.
Eguavoen had on Thursday backed Boniface to score against the North Africans, and the Bayer Leverkusen striker got the nod to start in the game in the absence of Victor Osimhen.
Boniface however failed to score after an average performance, and he was replaced by Taiwo Awoniyi in the 74th minute, failing to add to his one goal in his ninth appearance for the Super Eagles.
Asked by reporters after the game on the 23-year-old centre forward’s performance, the coach said: “Boniface plays like Romario that loves to dress the ball, but I will speak to him.”
Eguavoen still has confidence in Boniface’s ability to deliver though, adding: “Boniface needs to make quick decisions, I think he will start scoring soon.”
The victory kept the Super Eagles on top of AFCON qualifying Group D with seven points from three matches, one ahead of Benin Republic, who defeated Rwanda 3-0 also on Friday.
Libya, who host Nigeria in the return leg in Benghazi on Tuesday, are bottom with one point.
