Fulham have issued an official statement following racist abuse directed at their centre-back Calvin Bassey after the English FA Cup match against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Super Eagles defender Bassey was one of Fulham’s standout players in the FA Cup fifth round clash, scoring their goal in the 1-1 draw before they advanced 4-3 on penalties.
The Nigeria international revealed afterwards vile racist messages he received on social media, including being referred to as a ‘monkey’, the ‘N’ word and being told to ‘go back to your country’.
“Fulham Football Club is utterly appalled at the racist and homophobic abuse received and subsequently shared by Calvin Bassey on social media after yesterday’s FA Cup tie against Manchester United,” the English Premier League club stated on Monday.
“We strongly condemn this abhorrent behaviour which has no place in football or society. Such actions are entirely unacceptable, and we stand in full support of Calvin Bassey, who will continue to receive our full backing.
“We will do everything in our power to work with the relevant authorities in identifying the perpetrators of these vile messages and taking the strongest form of action against them.
“Fulham Football Club is committed to maintaining a firm stance against all forms of discrimination and remains dedicated to fostering an environment of respect and inclusion.”
Despite efforts to stamp out racism in football, including having the culprits banned and prosecuted, black players have often been at the receiving end of nasty abuse, mostly from faceless social media users.
