Frank Onyeka joins Augsburg on loan from Brentford
Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka secured a deadline day deal to Augsburg on Friday.
The Nigeria international joined the Bundesliga club on loan from Brentford.
“Shortly before the transfer window closes, FC Augsburg manages to recruit a reinforcement for the central midfield: Nigerian international Frank Onyeka is loaned for one season from Premier League club FC Brentford. The terms of the loan deal have been kept confidential,” Augsburg announced.
“For Onyeka, the move means a reunion with FCA head coach Jess Thorup. Both previously worked together at Danish first division club FC Midtjylland, for whom the 26-year-old played 123 games from 2017 to 2021.
“He then moved to Brentford FC, where he played 69 games in the Premier League, scoring one goal and providing four assists.
“He also made 25 international appearances for Nigeria and appeared in six Champions League matches for Midtjylland.”
Onyeka, who has been used mostly as a substitute since he joined Brentford, is looking forward to more regular action in Germany.
“With the loan to FC Augsburg, I hope to get a lot of playing time and am looking forward to being able to play an active role in the team straight away,” the defensive midfielder said.
“I hope for a successful season and look forward to working with Jess Thorup again. I can’t wait to get to know the fans and the rest of the team.”
Augsburg are excited to add the steel of Onyeka to their spine, according to sporting director Marinko Jurendic.
“The opportunity to bring Frank Onyeka to FCA was a chance we wanted to take. With his international experience, athletic ability and robustness, he brings a strong presence to the pitch,” Jurendic said.
“We are now well positioned in midfield for the current season as we have different types of players in our team. We are very happy that Frank has decided to join us. We wish him a good start and much success at FCA.”
Onyeka will join up with his new colleagues after the international break, during which he will feature for the Super Eagles in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Benin Republic (Saturday, September 7) and Rwanda (Tuesday, September 10).
