A stoppage time goal by Harry Maguire earned Manchester United a 2-1 win against Leicester City in the Emirates FA Cup fourth round at Old Trafford on Friday night.
Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi made a return to Leicester’s starting line-up after being sidelined with a hamstring injury since December.
The Nigeria international was impressive in Leicester’s midfield for the 58 minutes he played before being substituted off.
It was a return to Old Trafford for Ruud van Nistelrooy who was briefly in charge of United before the appointment of Ruben Amorim.
A shock seemed to be on the cards as Leicester took the lead in the 42nd minute.
Boubakary Soumaré won the ball back and fed it to Bilal El Khannouss.
The Moroccan in turn pulled back for the excellent Ndidi to shoot. United goalkeeper Andre Onana saved the shot but the ball hit Bobby De Cordova-Reid two yards out and into the net.
United came out more purposefully in the second half and almost equalised but Caleb Okoli made a goaline clearance.
The breakthrough for the hosts eventually came in the 68th minute thanks to Joshua Zirkzee.
Alejandro Garnacho beat his marker on the left and crossed the ball with a Leicester player blocking an initial shot before Zirkzee tapped into an empty net.
Maguire then emerged the hero in stoppage time as he rose highest to head home Bruno Fernandes’ free-kick to make it 2-1 and send FA Cup holders Manchester United into the fifth round.
The England centre-back appeared to have scored from an offside position but there was not VAR to review the action and the goal stood.
The fourth round of the FA Cup will continue on Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday with Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur all in action.
