Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi netted a brilliant goal at Craven Cottage on Sunday to inspire Fulham to a 3-2 English Premier League victory over leaders Liverpool.
The result ended Liverpool’s 26-game unbeaten run in the league as Fulham took four points off the Reds, who failed to extend their lead over second-placed Arsenal to 14 points.
Iwobi netted with a fierce left-foot finish in the 32nd minute to give Fulham the lead after Ryan Sessegnon’s goal had cancelled out Alexis Mac Allister’s early opener for Liverpool.
Rodrigo Muniz stretched Fulham’s advantage in the 37th minute, bullying Virgil van Dijk off the ball before firing home.
The goal was assisted by the impressive Iwobi, who took his goal contributions in the league this season to eight goals and five assists in 31 appearances.
Liverpool pulled one back through substitute Luis Diaz 18 minutes from time, but it was not enough as their gap on Arsenal stay at 11 points with seven rounds of fixtures left in the campaign.
Fulham rose to eighth, five points off fourth place, currently occupied by Chelsea, who were held to a 0-0 draw by 12th-placed Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium.
Also on Sunday, Southampton’s relegation to the Championship was sealed following a 3-1 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur.
Super Eagles stars Joe Aribo and Paul Onuachu featured for the hapless Saints as Brennan Johnson struck twice for Spurs, who moved above Manchester United to 13th.
Southampton are bottom with just 10 points from 31 matches, and are the first side in Premier League history to be relegated with seven games of the season left to play.
