EPL: Haaland hits hat-trick as Iwobi scores vs Ndidi’s Leicester
Erling Haaland scored the first hat-trick of the new English Premier League season on Saturday as Manchester City eased past Ipswich 4-1, while Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi was also on target.
Norway striker Haaland, who has won the Premier League Golden Boot in each of his two seasons in England, netted twice in the first half and once after the break as the champions came from behind to thrash the visiting newcomers at the Etihad Stadium.
Haaland has now scored seven hat-tricks in the Premier League, the same as Manchester United legend as Wayne Rooney.
At Craven Cottage, Iwobi hit the winner for Fulham in the 70th minute to seal a 2-1 victory over Leicester City, who had his Nigeria international teammate Wilfred Ndidi in there starting line-up.
Indeed, all three Super Eagles stars involved — Iwobi and Calvin Bassey for Fulham, Ndidi for Leicester City — played the full match.
In another Premier League fixture on Saturday involving Nigeria internationals, Ola Aina and Taiwo Awoniyi were on the Nottingham Forest side that defeated Joe Aribo’s Southampton 1-0 at St Mary’s Stadium.
While Aina and Aribo started, Awoniyi was a 76th minute substitute. Morgan Gibbs-White scored the game’s only goal 20 minutes from time.
Also in the afternoon Premier League kick-offs, Tottenham Hotspur thrashed Everton 4-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and West Ham secured their first three points with a 2-0 win at Crystal Palace.
