Super Eagles interim coach, Austin Eguavoen, has left the position following the expiration of his mandate to handle the team in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda.
Eguavoen, who was brought in to manage the team in the two matches, led the Eagles to a 3-0 victory over the Cheetahs at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo last Saturday, and the goalless draw in Kigali on Tuesday.
Though he had said the aim was to ensure the Eagles have a perfect start in the qualifiers, the three-time African champions have four points from two games.
Speaking during a post-match press interview, Eguavoen confirmed that he would be stepping down from his position.
He expressed satisfaction with the performance of the players and thanked the NFF for the opportunity to lead the team.
“I have been given a mandate to handle two games. I am very pleased with the boys and thanks to the NFF. It ends today – the two games mandate,” he said.
The choice of the former Nigeria international, who is also the technical director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), was made after the federation failed in their bid to bring in German coach, Bruno Labbadia, to replace Finidi George, late last month.
