Edo State has picked up the first three gold medals of the 8th National Youth Games in Delta State.
Esther Chijioke won the three gold medals in clean and jerk (45 kg), snatch 56kg and 101kg total in female weightlifting in the Indoor Sports Hall of the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba.
The triple gold medallist was understandably delighted with her feat, and she expressed joy afterwards.
“I am excited. I thank God for the victory after all our training, all the preparations so far, getting the desired result is what everybody wants,” Chijioke said.
“I thank my coaches and the Edo State Sports Commission for making the preparation for the games good for us.”
Edo State weightlifting coach Omoroghomwan Ikponmwosa said he was fulfilled after his athlete earned the first gold medals of the Games.
He added that his team is capable of getting more gold medals for Edo State as the competition progresses.
Chijioke’s feat came shortly after President Bola Tinubu, who was represented by the Minister of Sports Development, John Enoh, declared the Games open on Thursday, at the opening ceremony which took place inside the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba.
The President harped on the importance of grassroots sports development in nurturing young talent and strengthening the country’s position in global sports.
“In today’s world, sports play a crucial role in creating wealth, promoting peace, fostering national unity, and facilitating international diplomacy,” the President said.
With 4,585 athletes and 1,159 officials cleared to participate at the 2024 edition, it is the biggest in National Youth Games history.
The chief host of the Games, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, declared the even open along with Tinubu.
“Let me welcome the Honorable Minister of Sports and Youth Development Senator John Enor who represents the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria at this 8th National Youth Games and to specifically appreciate the organizing committees,” Governor Oborevwori said.
“Delta State is proud to partner with the Federal Ministry of Sports Development to ensure that the goals and objectives of this event are realized.
“The National Youth Games is a powerful vehicle for athletes development. Permit me to say that athletes development is not just about sports performance but also about developing social and ethical skills.
“To all our athletes, I congratulate you on making it here. I urge you to compete fairly but fiercely. You may not always win but you will be remembered for putting in your best.”
