Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has admitted that his team ‘maybe the worst’ in the 147-year history of the club.
United’s 3-1 defeat by Brighton on Sunday was the fourth in their last five home English Premier League games.
They have collected only 11 points in 11 league games since Amorim replaced was appointed in November, and United are 13th in the table — 10 points clear of the relegation zone but seven behind 10th-placed Fulham.
The result was Manchester United’s sixth home Premier League defeat of the season, their most from their opening 12 home matches of a league season since 1893-1894.
“In [the past] 10 games in Premier League, we won two,” Amorim said during his post-match press conference after yet another dismal display.
“Imagine what this is for a fan of Manchester United. Imagine what this is for me.
“We are getting a new coach who is losing more than the last coach. I have full knowledge of that.
“We are the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United. I know you [media] want headlines but I am saying that because we have to acknowledge that and to change that. Here you go: your headlines.”
Yankuba Minteh, Kaoru Mitoma and substitute Georginio Rutter scored on Sunday to end Amorim’s side’s mini-revival, during which they drew with Liverpool at Anfield in the Premier League, eliminated Arsenal in the FA Cup and came back to beat Southampton.
