Nigerian football icon Daniel Amokachi has been appointed by Nigeria Professional Football League club Lobi Stars as their new technical adviser.
“In a major shakeup, the Board of Lobi Stars FC has officially relieved Coach Eugene Agagbe of his position as Chief Coach with immediate effect,” the club said in a statement on Sunday night.
“This decision follows the Board’s review of Agagbe’s failure to meet a five-match win target, managing only one victory while losing three.
“In a bold move, the Board has appointed former Super Eagles coach, Daniel Amokachi, as the new Technical Adviser of the club. Amokachi’s appointment also takes immediate effect, as the club seeks to revitalize its strategy and improve performance on the field.
“Additionally, all backroom staff have been relieved of their duties and instructed to reapply if they wish to continue with the club. They have been asked to hand over all club property in their possession to the club’s secretary immediately.”
The club recorded their first win of the 2024/2025 NPFL season on Saturday, beating Shooting Stars 1-0 at the Lafia Township Stadium in a matchday 5 clash. It came on the back of three consecutive defeats. They currently occupy 17th place in the table on four points.
Amokachi will become the third former Super Eagles player to hold a coaching position in the NPFL.
Finidi George is currently in charge of Rivers United and Emmanuel Amuneke at Heartland. They all won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Tunisia as teammates. They have all worked with the senior national team in the past, either as assistant or head coach.
Amokachi was an assistant to the late Stephen Keshi when Nigeria won the AFCON in South Africa 11 years ago. Amuneke was briefly in charge to assist Austin Eguavoen in 2022 for Nigeria’s World Cup playoff with Ghana.
Finidi also served as an assistant before taking charge of the team as the head coach after the 2023 AFCON. He resigned after two matches, due to unsatisfactory results in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Benin Republic and South Africa.
