Super Eagles stars Ola Aina and Taiwo Awoniyi were in action for Nottingham Forest as they defeated Manchester City 1-0 to boost their hopes of finishing in the English Premier League top four positions, which would guarantee UEFA Champions League football next season.
Forest have now won a league game against City for the first time since a 3-2 win at Maine Road in the Championship in December 1997.
Aina played for 90 minutes in his 28th appearance in the league this season, and was one of the best players on the pitch, locking down the right side of Forest’s defence against the skillful Jeremy Doku.
On his part, Awoniyi replaced Chris Wood with three minutes left of regulation for his 20th league outing of this term.
In Saturday’s early kick-off at the City Ground, Callum Hudson-Odoi bagged the winner seven minutes from time.
The forward received a pass on the right wing, drove at goal and beat Ederson at his near post.
The win means Forest are unbeaten in three consecutive matches (one draw, two wins), while it was City’s third loss in their last five fixtures (two wins).
Nuno Espirito Santo’s men remain in third place in the league table, while Pep Guardiola’s side are fourth pending other results this weekend.
