The 2025 ECOWAS/Abuja International Marathon, will take place on Saturday March 1.
The marathon, which will feature elite runners from ECOWAS countries, is part of the activities lined up to mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the West African organisation.
Chairman of the Main Organizing Committee (MOC), Francis Njoaguani, disclosed that participants in the people’s race will be the biggest beneficiary of the increase in prize money, which has been raised to $71,000.
Njoaguani, who is also the director of the ECOWAS Youth and Sports Development Centre in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, said they decided to increase the prize money for the 5km race from $750 to $1000 to mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of ECOWAS and encourage people to make running a way of life.
He said they are not increasing the prize money for just the winner but for all the top finishers as specified in the participants’ guide.
The 5km Race will start at Eagle Square and end at the ECOWAS Commission in Asokoro, Abuja.
Also, the 21km (half-marathon) will start at the ECOWAS Commission and end at the same location.
Meanwhile, race Director Gabriel Okon said that the race is open to all categories of runners.
